While Kate is home visiting her mother, her Uncle Pete passes away suddenly. A confirmed bachelor, he had remained on the home farm inheriting the land from his parents. Kate is surprised to learn that Pete not only bequeathed the farm to her, but also an envelope of newspaper clippings and photographs of unfamiliar faces. His dying request "Find them" has her baffled. She thinks perhaps her mother could give her some insight.
"I guess for starters, he's not actually your uncle."
Unravelling Uncle Pete's story takes Kate on a journey through time as she traces the lives of Peter and his sisters, all given into the care of the Barnardo organization.

At The Crossroads: the history of the village of Eastwood

With this project I set out to record the story of Eastwood’s history and give it a moment in the sun. Many small villages are now only shadows of an earlier more vibrant time, their sign posts surrounded by ghosts of the past. This story originates deep in the core of Oxford County but it is a common tale of rural life, and early Ontario settlement. The tales of perseverance, independence and community ring true for rural life across the province. Like many early settlements they did not identity themselves by lines drawn on a municipal map but from the times neighbours gathered to celebrate, and to offer support. This book, the history of Eastwood, is a tribute to the function, beauty and value of rural life.
